What is a pediatric cardiac electrophysiologist?
A pediatric cardiac electrophysiologist is a pediatric cardiologist who receives specialized training in diagnosing and treating arrhythmias (irregular, fast, or slow heartbeats), pacemakers, and electrophysiology procedures.
The fellowship also involves research in cardiac electrophysiology. A cardiac electrophysiologist is involved in the evaluation of the electrical conduction system of the heart that, if abnormal, may result in heart block, extra heartbeats, and very slow or fast heartbeats.
Dr. Villafañe is a clinical, noninvasive, cardiac electrophysiologist. He was certified as a Heart Rhythm Professional by the International Board of Heart Rhythm Examiners. He is also a member of the Heart Rhythm Society and Pediatric and Congenital Electrophysiology Society (PACES). Dr.Villafane became the first cardiac electrophysiologis in the commonwealth of Kentucky in 1986. He still practices non-invasive pediatric cardiac electrophysiology including arrhythmias, pacemakers and defibrillators.
HEART RHYTHM SOCIETY:
On October 30,2008, Dr.Villafane was selected as a Fellow of this prestigious society becoming the first electrophysiologist in Kentucky and the 12th pediatric cardiac eletrophysiologist in the world to achieve this honor.
